Recently, a few members of the Platform Project and myself took it upon ourselves to go venture around Calgary trying out food places. It was an excuse to eat a lot of great food together and call it ‘work’. After trying many different, amazing restaurants, we chose our top 10 favourite halal places in Calgary! Let us know if you agree in the comments below!

1.) Jerusalem Shawarma

One of the many things that we loved about Jerusalem was the staff, kind and ready to help, they created a wonderful and welcoming atmosphere. On top of the great service, the food was incredible, from fresh salads to tender meats, whatever you decide to order will be bursting with flavour. Our recommendation would be the Beef Shawarma, with meat that is marinated to perfect paired perfectly with crisp vegetables, you are guaranteed come back for more. With locations around the city, no matter where you go, you’ll always have an amazing option!

2.) Faisal Kabab Hut 

When you’re craving some authentic, fresh, Pakistani dishes, Faisal’s kabab Hut is the restaurant to visit; with a warm and welcoming staff, and a nice, relaxed interior, you’ll feel right at home. From delicious vegetarian dishes to mouth-watering curries, Faisal’s has a menu to satisfy every single customer! If you decide to visit this wonderful establishment we would recommend ordering from the Tandoori BBQ list, specifically the chicken tikka, a spicy and tender dish perfectly seasoned and incredibly satisfying.

3.) Cedars Deli

Cedars Deli is great for many reasons, including their food and their delightful customer service! Their menu is wonderful, with a large selection of crisp, fresh veggies and delicious, tender meats, and mouth-watering desserts. Aside from their halal meats though, the falafel wrap is a must try; flavourful and perfectly paired with their dip and pita bread it will not only satisfy your cravings, it will keep bringing you back for more!

4.) Pho Daddy 

Pho daddy has proudly been deemed the best Pho restaurant in Calgary, and once you get a taste of their Pho, you’ll understand why! with a welcoming and cool interior to greet you, the true treasure lies within the menu, which allows customers to design their own Pho to perfection. Pho Daddy also boasts freshly made, in-house broth served with a variety of halal meats and delicious sides, this restaurant has a dish for whatever flavours you’re craving! The dishes are so personalized here that it’s actually a little difficult to give a recommendation, but we promise, no matter how you choose to decorate your dish, you’ll definitely love it!

5.) Jimmy’s A&A DELI

Jimmy’s is a favourite among Calgary’s youth, and there’s no surprise why; with an incredible staff and an amazing selection of fresh food, it’s not hard to win over customers. Jimmy’s offers authentic Mediterranean food, cooked to perfection for the past 28 years. For our readers we would recommend the Chicken Shawarma, a delectable and juicy shawarma wrap with fresh toppings and wonderfully slow-roasted chicken. Either way, no matter what you choose to eat at Jimmy’s A&A deli, you will always be left satisfied.

6.) Flipp’n Burgers 

Flipp’n Burgers has remained a Calgary staple for many years, collecting awards and recognition for their amazing foods and their great customer service! One of the many ways that Flipp’n Burgers has proved its love and dedication to its customers was by providing accommodations during Ramadan and staying open for suhoor (the pre-dawn meal), a wonderful touch that was greatly appreciated! From the menu we would recommend the Flipp’n burger, made with Albertan beef, seasoned to perfection and finished with some amazing Flipp’n sauce, this burger will leave you begging for more!

7.) Little Lebanon

A favorite among the Calgary community, Little Lebanon has earned its place on our list of the top 10 halal restaurants in Calgary, with their amazing quality, great service and wonderful atmosphere it’s definitely no surprise! The wraps are enormous, and the last bite is just as delicious as the first, you can really taste the quality, hard work and dedication that goes into the food here! From the wonderful menu, we would recommend the Kafta Platter, a dish served with two perfectly seasoned Kafta Kabobs, fresh Lebanese salad, saffron flavoured rice, and mouth-watering garlic potatoes!

8.) The Village Flatbread CO. 

The Village Flatbread Company is a favorite among Calgarians for many reasons, from its exquisite menu, made up of fine, fresh, local and organic ingredients, to its wonderful customer service. On top of the amazing quality that is offered, the village flatbread also boasts a vegan and gluten free menu and is loved by vegans and non-vegans alike. From the menu we would recommend the Redstone pizza, made with fresh tomato, mozzarella and basil, topped with a wonderful balsamic glaze, it will leave your taste buds super satisfied!

 

9.) Damascus Fine Mediterranean Foods 

The owners at Damascus fine Mediterranean Foods are part of what we love, with their friendly service you can tell that they put their heart into their work, and always make sure their food is top notch for the consumer. The only thing that outshines the service is the food, which has an interesting and delicious take on traditional shawarma! From the menu we would recommend the Chicken Shawarma Poutine, an incredible dish with a great twist!

10.) Zaika Biryani House 

Biryani, a signature dish of south-east Asia, bursting rich flavours, bright colours and delicious smells that vary from recipe to recipe. Zaika Biryani House has artfully mastered the dish in its many varieties, providing its customers with the authentic taste of home-made Biryani, all for an incredibly low cost! With so many incredible menu options, you may find it hard to resist ordering a little bit of everything! We would recommend ordering the Mutton Biryani, a delicious dish and an absolute must-try!
